Youth
Zaniolo debuted for the Italy under-19 side during the 2018 UEFA European Under-19 Championship, where he assisted in the team’s loss to Portugal in the final (4–3) after extra time. On October 11, 2018, he debuted with the Italy U21s, losing 1–0 to Belgium under manager Luigi Di Biagio.
Senior
On September 1, 2018, he was named to the senior Italian national team for its opening UEFA Nations League games against Poland and Portugal. He was called up for the first time by manager Roberto Mancini on September 1, 2018.
On March 23, 2019, he made his senior team debut in a 2–0 home win over Finland, entering as a substitute for Verratti and scoring Italy’s first goal. Early Career
Zaniolo was born and raised in Massa, Tuscany, where he developed in the Fiorentina youth system. On December 30, 2016, Zaniolo was cut from Fiorentina and subsequently signed with Virtus Entella. After several months with the Entella Primavera team, Zaniolo made his Serie B debut on March 11, 2017, at 17 years old, in a 3–2 win against Benevento. In the 2016-17 season, he appeared in seven games for the Biancocelesti.
On July 5, 2017, Inter Milan announced that Zaniolo had joined the club for a reported €1.8 million, plus another €1.7 million in incentives. In the 2017-18 season, Zaniolo was the Primavera team’s top scorer with 13 goals and won the Campionato Nazionale Primavera championship. On July 9, Zaniolo debuted for Inter’s reserves in a pre-season friendly against Crotone. Instead, he was not called up to Inter’s main squad but appeared in reserve games.

2018–19 Season
In June 2018, Rome announced that Zaniolo and Davide Santon had joined Roma as part of the arrangement that saw Radja Nainggolan depart to Inter. On June 25, Zaniolo underwent his medical examination and signed a five-year contract with the club for a fee of €4.5 million. He made his debut for Rome and UEFA Champions League debut on September 19, in a 3-0 loss at the Santiago Bernabéu against Real Madrid.
On September 26, 2018, he made his Serie A debut in a 4–0 home win against Frosinco. He scored his first goal in the league on December 26, playing for Roma and scoring a 3–1 victory over Sassuolo. During a 2–1 UEFA Champions League win over FC Porto on April 25, 2019, Zaniolo became the youngest Italian player to score twice in one match in the competition when he netted both of Roma’s goals.
2019–20 Season
On January 12, 2020, Zaniolo was injured in a 2–1 home defeat to Juventus when his right knee’s anterior cruciate ligament snapped. However, he resumed training in late June 2020. He also received letters of support from the Italian and global footballing community, including Roberto Mancini, Roberto Baggio, and Francesco Totti. All of them had previously undergone surgery by the same surgeon.
Even though he had been expected to miss the rest of the club season and, probably, the UEFA Euro 2020 (before the UEFA’s March 2020 decision to postpone the tournament for a year) due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all European footballing activities were put on hold in March 2020 owing to COVID-19 epidemic.
On July 5, 2020, Zaniolo made his return-from-injury debut as a late substitute in the away Serie A 1–2 defeat to Napoli. Then, on July 14, Zaniolo scored his first goal since his injury in the home Serie A 3–0 victory over Brescia, followed by another strike in the sixth minute of a 6–1 away win over SPAL on July 22.
2020–Present
Zaniolo was injured again in September 2020 over the international break with an anterior cruciate ligament tear. However, he returned to action in July 2021 under new manager José Mourinho during pre-season.
After returning from his second knee injury, Zaniolo scored in the 3–0 victory over Trabzonspor in the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League. On May 25, 2022, he scored the match’s only goal as Roma won the Europa Conference League final against Feyenoord.
