Barella played for the Italy U19s at the 2016 UEFA European Under-19 Championship and helped them finish in second place. Nicolo Barella started his career at Cagliari, making his debut in Serie A on May 4, 2015. He quickly established himself as a key player for the club, making 27 appearances during the 2015-16 season. In January 2016, he was loaned out to Como in the second division, where Nicolo made 19 appearances and scored one goal. He returned to Cagliari the following season and made 33 appearances during the 2017-18 campaign. On November 9, in the 2–1 home win over Verona, he made his Serie A debut and scored his first league goal for Inter. He scored his first goal in the Coppa Italia on January 29, 2020, in a 2–1 home victory over Fiorentina in the competition’s quarter-finals.
