Regarding her parents, she is the daughter of Austrian Formula One driver and aviation tycoon Niki Lauda.

At Niki Lauda’s company, her mother, Birgit Wetzinger, worked as a flight attendant. Likewise, she has three half-brothers, Lukas, Mathias, Christoph Lauda, and her identical brother Max Lauda.

He was a successful aviation entrepreneur who established and managed Lauda Air, Niki, and Lauda. Additionally, he spent two years as the Jaguar Formula One racing team’s team manager and a consultant for Scuderia Ferrari.

Despite the opposition of his family, Lauda chose to become a racing driver. As was customary in Central Europe, Lauda started driving a Mini before moving on to Formula Vee. However, he quickly advanced to driving private Porsche and Chevron sports cars.

To enter the fledgling March team as a Formula Two driver in 1971, he took out a 30 thousand pound bank loan secured by a life insurance policy. He had a running argument with his family about his desire to race and cut off further communication because of their disapproval.

In 1973, Lauda obtained a second bank loan to pay for his entry into the BRM team. Lauda was incredibly quick, but the team was struggling.

After placing third at the Monaco Grand Prix that year, Lauda’s popularity increased and Enzo Ferrari expressed interest. Owner of the team Enzo Ferrari questioned Clay Regazzoni about Lauda before he left BRM in 1974 to join Ferrari.

Due to Regazzoni’s glowing recommendations of Lauda, Ferrari quickly signed him and paid him enough to pay off his debts.

Niki Laude’s Career Accomplishments

Lauda became the top driver in Formula One after winning the championship in 1975 and dominating the 1976 season.

When Lauda crashed at the 1976 German Grand Prix while competing at the Nürburgring, his Ferrari 312T2 caught fire and nearly caught fire, leaving him with severe burns and hot toxic fumes inhalation.

Just after six weeks, at the Italian Grand Prix, he made it through and recovered well enough to compete once more.

Following a brief stint at Brabham and a two-year break, Lauda raced four seasons for McLaren between 1982 and 1985, winning the 1984 championship by a slim margin over his teammate Alain Prost.

Niki Laude’s Death & Legacy

Following a period of ill health, Lauda passed away in his sleep on May 20, 2019, at 70, at the University Hospital of Zürich, where he received dialysis treatment for kidney issues.

According to a statement made on behalf of his family, he passed away peacefully while being attended by his family.

Several current and former drivers and teams paid tribute to the deceased on social media. And during the Wednesday press conference before the 2019 Monaco Grand Prix.

Before the race, a moment of silence was observed. The Mercedes team painted their halo device red with a sticker reading “Niki we miss you” instead of their usual silver scheme, and fans and drivers were encouraged to wear red caps in his honor throughout the weekend.

With the legacy he left behind, Niki’s name is recognized as one of the greatest F1 drivers.
