Giovanni Reyna is an American professional footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder for Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund and the United States national team. Reyna has been dubbed the “American Messi” due to his similarity to the Argentine forward.
He began his career with New York City FC before signing with Dortmund in 2019. Reyna made his senior debut for the United States in 2020 and has represented his country at the U-15, U-17, and U-20 levels.
Giovanni is the son of former professional footballer Claudio Reyna and Danielle Egan, a former the United States women’s national team player. On January 18, 2020, Reyna made his Bundesliga debut for Borussia Dortmund as a substitute in the 72nd minute against FC Augsburg. As a result, He became the youngest American to play in the Bundesliga, besting Christian Pulisic’s record when he was 17.
On February 18, 2020, when he came on as a substitute for Paris Saint-Germain in the 67th minute, he became the third-youngest player to play in a UEFA Champions League knockout game.
