Jesus was a member of the Brazil under-20 team that came in second at the 2015 U-20 World Cup in New Zealand. He scored their first goal of the competition, a 4–2 victory over Nigeria, and sealed their place in the quarterfinals when he converted from the spot after defeating Uruguay and Portugal on penalties.

In 2016, he was chosen in Dunga’s provisional squad for the Copa América Centenario in the United States. He was a replacement for Douglas Costa, who got injured. On July 1, 2013, Jesus signed a youth contract with Palmeiras. During the year, he was Palmeiras’ top goalscorer, scoring 54 goals in 48 matches.

Jesus signed a three-year deal with Palmeiras in January 2014. Palmeiras extended the contract for two years, and his compensation would quadruple in the fifth year. If Jesus left before the end of his term, Palmeiras would be required to pay $30 million. However, Jesus’ employment contract modified the ratio of his economic rights from 75% to 70 percent in favor of Palmeiras to 70-30 percent in favor of his representatives.
