Youth

Nunez was a member of the Uruguay under-20 team that finished third at the 2019 South American U-20 Championship.

Nunez was in the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2019, where he played a role in three of his team’s goals and scored the first goal of their 3–1 victory over Norway. In the tournament’s final group game, Núñez scored Uruguay’s opening goal in a 2–0 win over New Zealand, helping his side finish top of Group C. Nunez joined the youth setup at Peñarol in 2013, when he was 14 years old. His first stay with the club was brief, but he returned in 2014 to complete his apprenticeship.

Benfica | 2020–21: Adaptation To Portugal

Nunez signed a five-year contract with Portuguese club Benfica on September 4, 2020. The club paid a record fee of €24 million for the player. Eleven days later, he made his debut for the club in a loss against PAOK for the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round.

He had five assists in his first four league games, and on October 18, he helped his team win 3-0 against Rio Ave. On the 22nd, he scored his first goals for the club with a hat-trick against Lech Poznań in a 4-2 away victory in a 2020-21 UEFA Europa League group stage match. Four days later, he scored his first Primeira Liga goal in a 2-0 home victory over B SAD.

He returned to playing after three weeks off from COVID-19 on December 3. He played in the Europa League group stage against Lech Poznań and scored a goal. In September, he scored two goals in two games in the Primeira Liga and was named Player of the Month and Forward of the Month. On September 29, he scored two goals against Barcelona in the Champions League.

On November 27, he scored his first hat-trick in the league. Because there weren’t enough players from the other team to continue playing, the play was halted early in the second half. On December 12, he scored another hat-trick during a 4-1 away win over Famalicão. He became the seventh player in the league to accomplish this feat.
