Sport Recife

Joelinton was born in Aliança, Pernambuco, and joined Sport Recife at 12. He played for the club’s youth team for two years before being promoted to the senior squad in 2013.

In March 2014, He made his professional debut, coming on as a 62nd-minute substitute for Neto Baiano in an away semi-final triumph (4–1 aggregate). In their Campeonato Pernambucano title defense, Sport won with a 3–1 aggregate score over Ceará in the final; Joelinton did not feature. However, he was on the bench six times during the season and helped them win.

Joelinton made seven appearances in the 2014 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A campaign at the end of the year. On November 23, he scored his first goal for Fluminense in a 2–2 home draw Fluminense, and on December 31, he scored the only goal against São Paulo after four minutes.

In 2015, Joelinton burst onto the scene in the New South Wales state league. However, in the second stage, he received two red cards against Santa Cruz and Náutico.

1899 Hoffenheim

Joelinton joined 1899 Hoffenheim on a five-year deal in June 2015. On December 18, he came on as a substitute for Jonathan Schmid in a 1–0 defeat at Schalke 04, his first season in Germany.

Loan To Rapid Wien

On June 23, Joelinton was loaned to Rapid Wien for the next two seasons. He made his debut on July 8 in the opening round of the Austrian Cup against FC Karabakh Wien, scoring the game’s first goal in a 3–1 victory.

On April 26, he scored a late winner at home to LASK Linz as the Grün-Weißen reached the final for the first time in 12 years. He equalized in the final on June 1, but Red Bull Salzburg prevailed 2–1.

Joelinton was in every one of Rapid’s UEFA Europa League matches last season. He put the game away with a goal against Genk on September 15 and a draw with Athletic Bilbao at the Allianz Stadion on December 8, 2016. 

On the domestic front, he contributed eight goals in 33 matches for his club, SV Darmstadt 98, but they finished fifth among ten clubs and could not participate in European competition.

On July 22, Joelinton was shown red for kicking back after being fouled by Michael Novak in a 2–2 home draw with SV Mattersburg, having been on the field for only 23 minutes.

Return To Hoffenheim

Joelinton was named in starting lineup for Hoffenheim’s first DFB-Pokal match at 1. FC Kaiserslautern on his return, and he scored a hat-trick in a 6–1 triumph. Then, on September 22, he opened a 1–1 home draw with Borussia Dortmund with a goal, and as a substitute three days later, he scored an equalizing goal for a 3–3 draw against Lyon at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena in a Champions League group game.

Newcastle United

On July 23, 2019, Joelinton signed for Newcastle United on a six-year contract for an undisclosed club-record sum of £40 million. On August 11, he made his debut in United’s 1–0 home loss to Arsenal; Shearer, the club’s all-time top goalscorer, blasted them over their performances.

Joelinton made his Premier League debut on August 25, scoring the game’s only goal in a 1–0 win over Tottenham Hotspur. It took him 14 months to score his second goal for the club; he scored the final goal in a 4–1 FA Cup Third Round replay victory over Rochdale on January 14, 2020. He broke his drought after scoring his first home league goal against Sheffield United on June 21, ending a 2,130-minute wait.

Joelinton netted two goals in his 38 appearances for the club, of which six were from the subs bench in 2019–20. In 2020–21, he increased his output to four goals from 31 appearances (eight off the bench).

Joelinton has been utilized as a box-to-box central midfielder since Eddie Howe took over as Newcastle United manager during the 2021–22 season, and his performances have increased significantly.
